I have drilled holes in the metal shelf support of those floating shelves i got some at ikea if the screw holes don t line up correctly with the studs.

Once you ve created a small hole switch to a 0 5 inches 1 3 cm bit and drill a hole for the bracket making sure not to drill too deep.
Use wood screws that are long enough to really bite into the wood maybe 1 1 2 inches.

You might want to have several supports if it is a long shelf.

The regular command strips work well in most indoor locations while the clear strips work best on very smooth surfaces.
Use screws into one stud and use anchors for the other support s.
You shouldn t have a problem with the shelf if it is mounted on studs and the supports extend out to near the end of the shelf far side from wall.
This will also normally be quite strong.
If you re planning to hang something outside or in your bathroom be sure to get the strips rated for outdoor use or bathroom use.
Depending on how the shelf is installed they may be on the back edge on the top or bottom of the shelf nearest the wall.

Make sure you are using the right kind of strip for the surface and location you want to apply it on.

Treat the wall with fungicide if damp is a problem and if you think cold is an issue you can line the wall with expanded polystyrene.
Use a drill to drill into the stud where you d like to hang your shelf.
When preparing the walls make sure you use abrasive paper instead of wire wool or a wire brush.
Slide the shelf over the cleat then use some finish nails to hold the shelf to the cleat.
